CLINICAL POSTING DONE FOR THE YEAR!!
Guess who’s done with Medicine and Surgery Posting for the year? If you guessed me, you are definitely correct. Now, I’m just counting months to my 3rd MB in December.
What was the Medicine and Surgery posting like?
Image from Pinterest. If I say I loved it, I would be lying, but if I say I hated it, I would also be lying.
Before we started the posting, there was an orientation organised for us, and one of the speakers said, “Don’t allow your coursemates to oppress you”. Well, they did oppress me.
There were days when I could completely understand what the consultant or the other doctors were saying, when what was in my head was in line with what I was being taught. Those were the good days.
The other days were the ones when my head felt empty. The days when the people around me knew the answers, and I didn’t know them. The days when I was actually oppressed, and I would go back to the hostel to write about how sad I was the whole day. Those were the bad days.
But all those days and more to come are all part of the experience.
How were my End-of-Posting Exams?
I’m just going to talk about my Surgery since it’s the most recent. It was on Tuesday, the 27th of August, and the first was the clinical aspect. For the long case, we clerked a patient for forty-five minutes and presented to our consultant. I clerked a patient with burns; she and her relatives were really nice to me, and even when time was almost up, they encouraged me to just hurry up. Personally, I can’t say if I did well or not, but I was just grateful that the person I presented to didn’t scare me. She asked a lot of questions about my presentation, I answered some, she gave me clues on some, and there were others I couldn’t answer. Next was the short case, and I did better here. First, the consultant asked me to sing a song he had asked us to learn, but I couldn’t sing it, so he went ahead and asked me to name all the surgical instruments on his table. I was surprised at how much I could remember, but I missed a few, though. In all, I was just happy that I was done with it.
On Friday 29th of August, was the day for the theory aspect. We wrote the essay paper first and then the single best answer questions. All I can say is it went well.
I’m almost done with my 4th year of Med school, just more tests to come and boom, MB.
